In June 2026, I formally began a historical and architectural review of OUAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This research focuses on verifying and preserving records related to two important events that occurred in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first is the inclusion of OUAN in the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Selected Architectural Designs 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second is the opening of OUAN to international architects as part of a program associated with UIA2011 Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At present, original documents, photographs, published materials, and personal records are being reviewed and organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, fact-checking and interviews with individuals involved in these events have been initiated in order to establish an accurate historical record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The purpose of this research is not to reinterpret history, but to verify, preserve, and document the architectural and cultural significance of SAKURA-AN based on verifiable evidence and firsthand records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the origins of OUAN may be traced back much earlier than its design and construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During my childhood, I frequently visited the workshop of my uncle, who operated a traditional architectural joinery business. He produced doors, ranma panels, and other architectural elements for Japanese homes. Through these experiences, I became familiar with wood, craftsmanship, building materials, and the detailed components that shape residential spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the time, I did not recognize the significance of these experiences. Looking back, however, they may have formed one of the foundations of my lifelong interest in housing, architecture, and spatial design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My uncle passed away relatively early, but his dedication to craftsmanship remained part of my family’s memory. My aunt continued to maintain a strong interest in homes and architecture, and she remained deeply interested in residential design throughout her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This record is not intended to establish a direct architectural relationship to SAKURA-AN. Rather, it documents one possible origin of the values, observations, and interests that eventually led to the creation of SAKURA-AN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the completion of OUAN, another chapter emerged in its history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to my recollection, architect Ken Yokogawa contacted me directly and requested permission to use OUAN as part of an educational program associated with Nihon University, where he was teaching at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I agreed to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As I remember, students studied and analyzed OUAN as part of their architectural education. The house became a reference project through which students explored architectural concepts, spatial composition, urban housing, and residential design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At a later stage, I was invited to Nihon University and met with students and faculty members. During these sessions, I discussed the house and answered questions regarding its design, living experience, and architectural qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The chief project architect, MR.Y, also participated in these discussions and provided explanations regarding the architectural design and development of OUAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several professors and architects associated with the program have now been identified through surviving business cards and archival materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At present, detailed records of the program are being investigated and verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This research seeks to understand not only how OUAN was designed, but also how it may have contributed to architectural education and the exchange of ideas between architects, students, and residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
