Original Shirt Design Series inspired by the coral reef fish of Okinawa (c.2010–2015)

The works in this series were created between approximately 2010 and 2015. However, their origin reaches much further back.
Since my mid-twenties, I have traveled to Okinawa nearly one hundred times. There were years when I visited five or six times, always drawn by the beauty of its coral reefs. Quietly, and sometimes through stronger currents, I spent countless hours swimming among the coral, observing the vibrant reef fish and experiencing the rhythm of the sea.
Those experiences were never intended to become artworks. Instead, over more than three decades, the colors, patterns, movements, and atmosphere of the reef gradually accumulated in my memory. They became part of the way I perceive beauty, form, and design.
Eventually, those long-held memories emerged naturally as a series of shirt designs. These works are therefore not illustrations of fish, but visual expressions shaped by decades of continuous dialogue with nature.
Each design represents not a single moment, but the accumulation of countless encounters with Okinawa’s coral reefs. They are memories transformed into form, experiences translated into design, and time made visible.
This series stands as a record of a lifelong relationship between nature, memory, and creativity.

このシリーズの作品は、およそ2010年から2015年にかけて制作されたものです。しかし、その原点は、それよりはるか以前にあります。
20代半ばから、沖縄にはこれまで約100回近く足を運んできました。年に5〜6回訪れた年もあり、その目的はいつも、美しいサンゴ礁の海に身を委ねることでした。
静かな海の日もあれば、力強いうねりのある日もありました。サンゴ礁の間をゆっくり泳ぎ、多くの魚たちと出会い、その色彩や模様、動き、そして海全体の生命のリズムを長い年月にわたり体験し続けてきました。
その体験は、作品を制作するためのものではありませんでした。しかし30年以上という時間の中で、その記憶は少しずつ心の中に蓄積され、自然と美しさへの感性やデザインの感覚を育んでいきました。
そして、その長い年月を経て、記憶の中に積み重なった海の印象が、シャツデザインという抽象的な表現として自然に姿を現したのが、このシリーズです。
これらの作品は魚そのものを描いたものではありません。一つひとつの作品は、沖縄のサンゴ礁で積み重ねた数え切れない体験が、時間をかけて創造へと昇華した「記憶のデザイン」です。
このシリーズは、自然と向き合い続けた人生の時間、心に刻まれた記憶、そして創造性との長い対話を記録した作品群です。

Characteristics
The Titan Triggerfish is one of the largest and most striking triggerfish inhabiting coral reefs. Its bold black, white, and yellow coloration creates a distinctive geometric appearance.
Equipped with exceptionally strong jaws and teeth, it feeds on hard-shelled prey such as sea urchins, crustaceans, and mollusks.
During the breeding season, it becomes highly territorial and is well known for courageously defending its nest, even against much larger divers. Outside the nesting season, it is often seen swimming calmly through coral reefs, making it one of the most memorable and iconic fishes of Okinawa’s underwater world.

非常に丈夫な歯をもち、ウニや貝類、甲殻類など硬い殻を砕いて食べます。
繁殖期には縄張り意識が非常に強くなり、自分より何倍も大きなダイバーにも向かってくるほど勇敢な性質を示します。一方、普段はサンゴ礁の間をゆったりと泳ぎ、その力強さと独特の色彩は多くのダイバーを魅了しています。
