Abstract

On June 21, 2026, the establishment of OM (22degrees Origin Museum) within 22degrees.com was formally initiated.

OM is an independent archive and preservation project focusing on original works by Charles and Ray Eames.

The purpose of OM is to preserve, research, document, and share the origins and historical development of the design work of Charles and Ray Eames.

Unlike conventional Eames collections or furniture-focused websites, OM is dedicated not only to finished works but also to exploring, documenting, and preserving the origins of Eames design and the evolutionary journey that followed.

Background

The direct catalyst for the creation of OM (22degrees Origin Museum) was the acquisition of an original Eames Leg Splint.

The Leg Splint, developed during World War II, is widely regarded as one of the earliest practical applications of the molded plywood research conducted by Charles and Ray Eames.

This research later contributed to a series of historically significant designs, including the LCW, DCW, DCM, and ultimately the Fiberglass Shell Chairs.

In June 2026, an original Evans Products Company Leg Splint was acquired and preserved as a historical artifact.

With this acquisition, OM moved beyond the conceptual stage and became a museum project with its first preserved asset.

Mission

OM is not intended to be merely a furniture collection.

Its primary mission is based on four principles:

OM seeks to preserve not only physical objects but also the stories, ideas, experiments, technologies, manufacturing processes, and historical context that shaped the development of Eames design.

Future Preservation Focus

OM intends to preserve and study:

• Eames Leg Splints
• Evans LCW or Evans DCW
• Early Zenith Plastics Arm Shell Chairs
• Eames-related historical materials and documents

Particular attention will be given to early Zenith Plastics Salmon Pink Arm Shell Chairs, which are expected to become one of the core preservation and research themes of OM in the years ahead.

Significance

The opening of OM (22degrees Origin Museum) marks the beginning of a long-term effort to preserve and communicate the origins and historical development of Eames design.

Rather than focusing solely on iconic finished products, OM seeks to illuminate the research, experimentation, manufacturing processes, and human-centered thinking that made those designs possible.

背景

OM構想の直接的な契機となったのは、Eames Leg Splintの取得である。

Leg Splintは第二次世界大戦中に開発された医療器具であり、Charles and Ray Eamesによる成形合板研究の初期の重要な実用例の一つとして位置付けられている。

こうした研究は、その後のLCW、DCW、DCM、さらにFiberglass Shell Chairなどの歴史的デザインへとつながっていった。

2026年6月、Evans Products Company製のオリジナルLeg Splintを取得し、歴史的資料として保存することが決定された。

これにより、構想段階にあったOMは、実際の収蔵資料を有するミュージアムプロジェクトとして始動した。

特にZenith Plastics製の初期Salmon Pink Arm Shell Chairについては、OMの中核的な保存・研究テーマの一つとして、長期的な収集・研究・記録・公開を進める予定である。

意義

OM（22degrees Origin Museum）の開設は、Eamesデザインの起源と歴史的発展を長期的に保存し、未来へ伝えていく活動の出発点となる。

完成された象徴的なプロダクトだけに焦点を当てるのではなく、それらを生み出した研究、実験、製造技術、そして人間を中心としたデザイン思想までを保存・研究対象として捉える。

本記録をもって、OM（22degrees Origin Museum）のMuseum Development Log第一号とする。
