Chapter 6
When a Hexagonal Table Became the Heart of an Architectural Work
At the center of the living space in Hacchobori OUAN stood one piece of furniture for many years.
It was a vintage Chinese hexagonal table, purchased while living in Fukuoka.
Before moving it into OUAN, there was one concern.
Its distinctive hexagonal form possessed a strong visual presence, and there was uncertainty about whether such a unique piece would harmonize with the architectural space.
That question was discussed with Ken Yokogawa.
His response came almost immediately.
He simply said that it was a remarkable piece of furniture and that it would suit the house beautifully.
Those words have remained vivid ever since.
As the years passed, the table naturally became far more than a piece of furniture.
Placed at the center of the living room, it gradually became one of the defining elements of the entire architectural work.
It became the place where family gathered.
Where friends shared meals and conversations.
Where music continued to resonate after listening sessions had ended.
Where films were discussed long after the screen had gone dark.
Countless memories quietly accumulated around it.
There is something unique about the geometry of a hexagon.
Unlike a rectangle, it has no dominant front or back.
Unlike a circle, it maintains a subtle sense of direction while welcoming people equally from every side.
It gently draws attention toward a shared center without imposing hierarchy.
Within OUAN’s three-dimensional one-room spatial composition, the table functioned almost like the quiet center of gravity of the entire living space.
Sometimes, a piece of furniture becomes something greater than furniture.
It becomes a vessel for memory.
This hexagonal table witnessed magazine and book photography, welcomed countless visitors, and remained present through everyday meals, conversations, celebrations, and moments of quiet reflection.
Looking back today, Ken Yokogawa’s immediate confidence in placing this table within OUAN seems especially meaningful.
Perhaps he was not simply evaluating the furniture itself.
Perhaps he already understood what role it would eventually play within the life of the architectural work.
Architecture is never completed by the building alone.
It continues to mature through furniture, daily life, conversations, relationships, and the memories accumulated over time.
The hexagonal table became one of the quiet foundations that allowed OUAN to grow into the place it is today.
Through this single piece of furniture, another lesson became clear.
Architecture does not merely create space.
It creates a setting in which objects, people, and memories gradually come together to form experiences that continue to deepen throughout a lifetime.

Chapter 5
Designing the Beginning of a Day
Among the many experiences that became part of everyday life during more than twenty years at Hacchobori OUAN, one quiet habit gradually emerged without intention.
It was taking a bath every morning.
During my years working in business, evenings were often filled with dinners, meetings, and social gatherings.
There were many nights when I returned home exhausted and simply went to bed.
As a result, morning bathing became a natural part of daily life.
Yet within OUAN, it became much more than a daily routine.
The bathroom itself is unlike that of a conventional house.
Located on the north side of the building, it was custom designed with a glass ceiling that opens upward toward the sky.
Each morning offered a different experience.
Some mornings revealed a deep blue sky.
On others, clouds drifted slowly overhead.
When it rained, large drops struck the glass above, transforming the entire room into a quiet place where weather could be experienced directly.
The changing seasons continually altered the quality of light and the color of the sky.
No two mornings were ever the same.
The purpose of those moments was never simply to bathe.
They became a quiet transition between yesterday and today.
A time to clear the mind.
A time to regain calm.
A time to begin a new day.
None of this was planned consciously.
It emerged naturally through living within this architectural work.
Looking back now, it seems that the architecture was never designed only to create rooms.
It also shaped the rhythm of everyday life.
It quietly created an experience that allowed each morning to begin with greater clarity, calmness, and awareness.
Architecture has the ability to transform daily habits without demanding attention.
Over many years, those small changes gradually shape the way a person lives.
The simple habit of taking a morning bath became one of the experiences through which Hacchobori OUAN revealed that quiet power.

Chapter 4
An Architectural Work That Brings Light and Sky into Everyday Life
One of the qualities that has remained most memorable throughout more than twenty years of living in Hacchobori OUAN is its remarkable relationship with nature.
Although located in the heart of a dense urban environment, this architectural work allows light, sky, wind, rain, and even the moon to become natural parts of everyday life.
At the center of this experience is the approximately eight-meter-high atrium.
Its significance lies far beyond its height.
Rather than simply creating a dramatic interior, it forms a vertical passage that connects everyday living with the sky above.
Through this opening, time itself becomes visible.
Morning begins with soft natural light quietly descending into the house.
As the day progresses, sunlight changes continuously with the seasons, giving the same space a different character from hour to hour.
In the evening, fading light gently marks the passing of time.
On clear nights, the moon occasionally appears above the atrium.
Watching a full moon suspended in the darkness above the living space creates a quiet moment that is difficult to describe in words.
Rain brings an entirely different experience.
Large raindrops striking the skylight produce sounds that resonate softly throughout the architectural space.
The atmosphere changes completely.
Although nothing in the building itself has changed, the entire space seems to become a different architectural work.
None of these experiences are extraordinary events.
They occur naturally, every day.
No two days are ever exactly the same.
Perhaps that is why this architectural work has never become ordinary.
Every day offers a slightly different encounter with light, weather, season, and time.
Its value was never fixed on the day construction was completed.
Instead, the architecture continues to generate new experiences through the continuous passage of time.
Looking back now, it becomes clear that these quiet daily encounters gradually shaped sensitivity, perception, and imagination.
Watching light.
Looking at the sky.
Feeling the wind.
Listening to rain.
Observing the moon.
Each experience seems insignificant by itself.
Yet repeated over more than twenty years, they quietly become part of one’s way of seeing and understanding the world.
Architecture is often understood as something that shelters people from nature.
OUAN revealed another possibility.
Architecture can also welcome nature into everyday life, allowing people and the natural world to exist in continuous dialogue.
For more than two decades, Hacchobori OUAN has gently taught that lesson through everyday living.

Chapter 3
When Music and Film Become a Single Spatial Experience
One of the most memorable experiences that emerged after moving into Hacchobori OUAN was discovering a completely new way of experiencing music and film.
It was not simply about listening to music or watching movies.
It was about experiencing them as part of the architecture itself.
OUAN is composed as what could be described as a three-dimensional one-room space.
Its horizontal living spaces and its dramatic vertical volume, created by the eight-meter atrium, intersect and merge into one continuous architectural environment.
Because of this spatial composition, sound is never confined to a single room.
Instead, it travels naturally through both the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the house, filling the entire architectural volume with remarkable softness.
Rather than hearing sound from speakers, it feels as though the architecture itself gently embraces the listener with sound.
This unique acoustic atmosphere became one of the defining qualities of everyday life within OUAN.
Another discovery came through the large vertical blinds that Ken Yokogawa selected for the living room.
One day, a projector was aimed at those blinds.
What had once been part of the window suddenly became a large projection screen.
Concert films by favorite musicians.
Beloved films watched countless times.
The images and music no longer belonged only to the screen.
They expanded naturally throughout the architectural space.
At that moment, it no longer felt like watching television.
The architectural work itself had quietly transformed into a private theater.
The sound system, carefully integrated into the living space, further enhanced this experience.
From the central seating position, sound arrived naturally from every direction.
It was not simply surround sound.
The entire three-dimensional one-room space became part of the acoustic experience.
Architecture, space, and sound worked together to create an atmosphere that felt calm, immersive, and remarkably gentle.
Looking back today, those moments were far more than entertainment.
Without realizing it, they became opportunities to think about the relationship between space, music, time, and human experience.
How does architecture influence the way music is felt?
How does space change the perception of time?
How can architecture transform an ordinary evening into a memorable experience?
These questions were not learned through study.
They emerged naturally through everyday life inside this architectural work.
Many of the ideas that now shape new creative projects can be traced back to those accumulated experiences.
What was designed was not simply a living room.
What was designed was a way of spending time.
Listening to music.
Watching films.
Sharing conversations.
Enjoying moments of quiet reflection.
Architecture transformed these ordinary activities into experiences with greater depth, richness, and emotional resonance.
This may also be another expression of Ken Yokogawa’s philosophy:
“Creating things is creating experiences.”
Architecture offers more than physical space.
It creates new ways of living, new ways of experiencing time, and new ways of nurturing human creativity.
Through music, film, and the unique spatial composition of its three-dimensional one-room design, Hacchobori OUAN has continued to teach that lesson every day for more than twenty years.

Chapter 2
“Hanami with a Drink” — An Architectural Work That Creates New Experiences Every Spring
One of the design concepts Ken Yokogawa proposed for Hacchobori OUAN was a simple yet memorable phrase:
“Hanami with a drink.”
At the time the house was designed, it was impossible to fully understand the depth of that idea.
Only after living in this architectural work for more than twenty years has its true meaning gradually become clear.
In Japan, hanami—the tradition of gathering beneath cherry blossoms to celebrate spring—is one of the country’s most cherished cultural customs.
People gather with family and friends, share food and conversation, and enjoy the brief beauty of the blossoms.
Yet the reality is often quite different.
Cherry blossom season usually arrives while the evenings are still cold. Nighttime hanami frequently means enduring chilly temperatures for the sake of a beautiful view.
That, too, is part of the tradition.
But OUAN transformed the experience into something entirely different.
Inside a warm, quiet living space, a full-height opening frames the cherry blossoms like a living work of art.
As evening falls, the illuminated blossoms appear beyond the white interior walls, creating a breathtaking composition of light, color, and silence.
Within that setting, conversations unfold naturally.
Meals are shared.
A glass is raised.
Time slows.
It becomes more than simply looking at cherry blossoms.
It becomes an experience.
More importantly, this experience is not exceptional because it happened once.
It returns every spring.
Each year brings new memories, new conversations, and new moments that quietly become part of life itself.
Looking back after more than two decades, this may be the greatest value of the architectural work.
What was designed was not merely a large window.
Nor was it simply a living room overlooking cherry trees.
What was truly designed was an experience that would return, year after year, throughout the life of its inhabitants.
That realization has profoundly changed the way architecture is understood.
Architecture does not end on the day construction is completed.
Its true value unfolds gradually through time.
It continues to generate new experiences, new memories, and new meanings as people live within it.
This, perhaps, is the deepest meaning behind the phrase:
“Creating things is creating experiences.”
Today, those words are no longer understood as an architectural philosophy alone.
They have become a lived reality.
More than twenty years of experiencing “Hanami with a drink” have revealed that architecture has the power to shape not only space, but also memory, emotion, and the rhythm of an entire life.
Every spring, OUAN quietly reminds me of that truth once again.

Chapter 2

Chapter 1
Rediscovering OUAN Before My Sixtieth Birthday
Next year marks my sixtieth birthday.
As I approach this milestone, I find myself looking once again at Hacchobori OUAN, the home in which I have lived for more than twenty years.
OUAN has never been simply a residence.
It has been the place where countless moments unfolded, where life quietly accumulated, and where many of the ideas that now shape my new creative work and future projects first began to take root.
Recently, I returned to the books and architectural publications written by Ken Yokogawa.
Reading them again brought an unexpected realization.
It was not architectural knowledge that enabled me to understand his philosophy.
Rather, it was more than two decades of living inside one of his architectural works that finally allowed his words to become something I could understand through experience.
One sentence, in particular, has remained deeply with me:
“Creating things is creating experiences.”
Today, those words no longer feel like an architectural concept.
They describe the life that has unfolded within OUAN.
This house has continuously generated experiences.
Conversations with friends.
Meals shared with family.
Quiet moments of reflection.
Music.
Films.
The changing seasons.
And every spring, the experience described in the original design concept—“Hanami with a drink”—returns naturally, as cherry blossoms bloom beyond the large opening of the living space.
None of these moments were accidental.
They were experiences made possible, enriched, and sustained by architecture itself.
Looking back now, it seems that Ken Yokogawa was never designing only a building.
He was designing experiences that would continue unfolding throughout a person’s life.
Another idea that deeply resonates is his belief that an architect should discover wishes that even the client has not yet recognized.
At the time, many requests were made for this house.
Yet what was ultimately created was something far greater than those requests.
It was a way of living.
It was a richness of life that could not have been imagined beforehand.
Over the years, that gift has continued to reveal itself.
Ken Yokogawa has also written that architecture is not merely about designing space, but about designing experience.
After living here for more than twenty years, those words have become profoundly meaningful.
The value of an architectural work is not determined on the day it is completed.
Its true value emerges through light, wind, sound, changing seasons, daily routines, relationships, silence, and the countless experiences that quietly accumulate over time.
Those experiences gradually shape one’s sensitivity, one’s way of thinking, and ultimately one’s life.
OUAN has taught this lesson through everyday living.
The new ideas and creative directions now beginning to take shape did not emerge independently.
They grew from more than twenty years of accumulated experience within this architectural work.
Light.
Wind.
Space.
Silence.
Human relationships.
These experiences settled quietly into the body and mind, matured over time, and eventually reappeared as new forms of creativity.
Experience does not end when the moment passes.
It continues to mature.
It circulates.
Eventually, it becomes the foundation for new creation.
Only now, as I approach my sixtieth birthday, am I beginning to understand that the ideas I now describe as Experiential Value and Abundance Through Circulation may have already been taking shape throughout those years of living in OUAN.
For that reason, I feel compelled to study this work once again.
I want to revisit Ken Yokogawa’s writings, review archival materials, organize historical records, and reflect upon the memories and stories shared by those involved in its creation.
This is not an exercise in nostalgia.
It is an attempt to understand, as faithfully as possible, what this architectural work gave to one human life, how it nurtured that life, and how its influence continues into the future.
These experiences cannot be preserved through drawings alone.
Nor can they be fully conveyed through photographs.
What deserves preservation is not only the architecture itself, but also the lived experiences that the architecture made possible.
That is why I hope to preserve Hacchobori OUAN not only as an architectural work, but also as a cultural asset whose true value lives within the experiences it continues to create.

This research focuses on verifying and preserving records related to two important events that occurred in 2011.
The first is the inclusion of OUAN in the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Selected Architectural Designs 2011.
The second is the opening of OUAN to international architects as part of a program associated with UIA2011 Tokyo.
At present, original documents, photographs, published materials, and personal records are being reviewed and organized.
In addition, fact-checking and interviews with individuals involved in these events have been initiated in order to establish an accurate historical record.
The purpose of this research is not to reinterpret history, but to verify, preserve, and document the architectural and cultural significance of SAKURA-AN based on verifiable evidence and firsthand records.

One of the origins of OUAN may be traced back much earlier than its design and construction.
During my childhood, I frequently visited the workshop of my uncle, who operated a traditional architectural joinery business. He produced doors, ranma panels, and other architectural elements for Japanese homes. Through these experiences, I became familiar with wood, craftsmanship, building materials, and the detailed components that shape residential spaces.
At the time, I did not recognize the significance of these experiences. Looking back, however, they may have formed one of the foundations of my lifelong interest in housing, architecture, and spatial design.
My uncle passed away relatively early, but his dedication to craftsmanship remained part of my family’s memory. My aunt continued to maintain a strong interest in homes and architecture, and she remained deeply interested in residential design throughout her life.
This record is not intended to establish a direct architectural relationship to SAKURA-AN. Rather, it documents one possible origin of the values, observations, and interests that eventually led to the creation of SAKURA-AN.

Following the completion of OUAN, another chapter emerged in its history.
According to my recollection, architect Ken Yokogawa contacted me directly and requested permission to use OUAN as part of an educational program associated with Nihon University, where he was teaching at the time.
I agreed to participate.
As I remember, students studied and analyzed OUAN as part of their architectural education. The house became a reference project through which students explored architectural concepts, spatial composition, urban housing, and residential design.
At a later stage, I was invited to Nihon University and met with students and faculty members. During these sessions, I discussed the house and answered questions regarding its design, living experience, and architectural qualities.
The chief project architect, MR.Y, also participated in these discussions and provided explanations regarding the architectural design and development of OUAN.
Several professors and architects associated with the program have now been identified through surviving business cards and archival materials.
At present, detailed records of the program are being investigated and verified.
This research seeks to understand not only how OUAN was designed, but also how it may have contributed to architectural education and the exchange of ideas between architects, students, and residents.
