Overview
This artifact is an original Ecuadorian 5,000 Sucres banknote that was actually used during my visit to the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, in May 1995.
After being preserved for approximately thirty years, this banknote was rediscovered on June 30, 2026.
This artifact is not treated merely as an old banknote. Within the Origin Museum, it is positioned as a primary historical artifact documenting the early field experience that later developed into the research activities of the 22degrees Universe.
The banknote is also an important material document showing how the Republic of Ecuador represented its national history, cultural identity, and natural heritage through currency design.
In addition, the reverse side of the banknote features the Galápagos Giant Tortoise, the same symbolic subject as Origin Asset 001, the Galápagos Giant Tortoise wooden sculpture acquired during the same journey.

This artifact shows natural folds and signs of handling consistent with actual circulation as a banknote. At the same time, no major damage is visible, and the object remains in a stable condition as a preserved historical material.
The overall color composition consists of brown, reddish-brown, violet-brown, blue-violet, and multicolored printing. The surface includes fine guilloché patterns, layered geometric backgrounds, portrait engraving, national emblems, denomination marks, and natural imagery.
These elements are not merely decorative. They represent both anti-counterfeiting security design and visual expression, making this artifact valuable as a material example of late twentieth-century Ecuadorian banknote printing and visual communication design.
Obverse Iconographic Analysis
The obverse side features Juan Montalvo (1832–1889), one of Ecuador’s major writers, essayists, intellectuals, and political thinkers.
The inclusion of Juan Montalvo on a national banknote indicates that Ecuador positioned intellectual heritage, literature, democratic thought, and cultural identity as elements of national representation.
A banknote is therefore not only a medium of economic exchange. It also functions as a public medium through which a nation communicates history, values, culture, and collective identity.

Historical Context of the Sucre
The Sucre was the official currency of Ecuador from 1884 until the country’s transition to the United States Dollar in 2000.
As a result, this banknote is no longer a circulating currency. It now exists as a historical document of Ecuador’s monetary system, economic history, and national visual culture in the late twentieth century.

This wooden sculpture represents considerably more than a travel souvenir.
It functions as a material record connecting personal experience, scientific curiosity, cultural memory, long-term preservation, and the continuous evolution of ideas over time.
The subject of this sculpture is the Galápagos Giant Tortoise, one of the most iconic endemic species of the Galápagos Islands.
The Galápagos Islands occupy an important place in the history of science as the location where Charles Darwin’s observations during the voyage of HMS Beagle in 1835 contributed significantly to the development of the theory of evolution through natural selection.
Long before this journey took place, the owner had developed a deep interest in Darwin’s theory of evolution, the unique ecosystems of isolated islands, and the remarkable biological diversity represented by the Galápagos Giant Tortoise.
The opportunity to visit the Galápagos Islands and encounter these extraordinary animals in their natural environment had therefore become a long-held personal aspiration.
In May 1995, that aspiration was finally realized.
Standing before a living Galápagos Giant Tortoise produced an experience that extended beyond biological observation.
Its immense scale, slow movement, extraordinary longevity, and quiet presence conveyed the impression of a life form that had silently existed through millions of years of Earth’s history.
That experience became one of the earliest experiential foundations upon which many later concepts explored within the 22degrees Universe would gradually emerge.
The sculpture acquired on Isabela Island at the conclusion of that journey preserves not only the memory of a place, but also the emotional and intellectual experience associated with that encounter.

This asset was acquired in May 1995 on Isabela Island in the Galápagos Islands, Republic of Ecuador.
The acquisition was rooted in a long-standing interest in Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, the Galápagos Islands as a symbolic site of evolutionary thought, and the long-held aspiration to encounter a real Galápagos Giant Tortoise.
During the final stage of the journey, this hand-carved wooden Galápagos Giant Tortoise was encountered on Isabela Island and acquired as a way to preserve the experience and emotional impact of that encounter for the future.
Since 1995, the asset has been preserved and displayed for approximately thirty years in living spaces, including the owner’s home and Hatchobori O&.
On June 26, 2026, the asset was rediscovered during the organization of stored materials related to the development of the 22degrees Universe archive.
On the same date, the asset was formally registered as Origin Asset 001 within the 22degrees Universe Archive. - Condition Report
The asset is made of wood and is considered to be a hand-carved object, likely carved from a single piece of wood.
The surface appears to have been finished with a protective coating.
