Kappa and Tengu:
How Expectations of Invisible Beings Enrich Human-People Experience
This research explores how expectations of invisible beings enrich Human-People Experience through the cultural figures of Kappa and Tengu found in Japanese folklore and traditional narratives.
The purpose of this research is not to determine whether Kappa or Tengu actually exist.
Rather, the focus is on understanding how people have historically imagined that such beings might exist, and how those expectations transformed mountains, rivers, forests, and everyday landscapes into places filled with possibility, wonder, and discovery.
People are often moved not only by what exists, but also by what might exist.
Expectations of unseen beings can stimulate curiosity, expand imagination, and add new meaning to ordinary environments.
These expectations have long contributed to adventure, exploration, storytelling, and the enrichment of Human-People Experience.
This research begins with Kappa and Tengu as case studies and explores how invisible presences have influenced culture, imagination, and experience throughout history.
Ultimately, the goal is not to study Kappa or Tengu themselves, but to investigate how expectations of invisible beings generate joy, curiosity, discovery, and meaningful experiences for people.
This research forms part of Human-People Experience studies and examines how the possibility of unseen existence can enrich the lives and experiences of people.

河童と天狗
― 見えない存在への期待がHuman-People Experienceをどのように豊かにするか ―
本研究では、日本の伝統文化や民間伝承に登場する河童と天狗を題材として、「見えない存在への期待が人々の体験をどのように豊かにするのか」を考察していく。
河童や天狗が実際に存在するかどうかは、本研究の主題ではない。
むしろ重要なのは、人々が長い歴史の中で「河童がいるかもしれない」「天狗に出会うかもしれない」と想像しながら自然と向き合い、その期待によって山や川、森や道が単なる風景ではなく、物語や発見の可能性を持つ特別な場所へと変化してきたことである。
人々は時として、実際に存在するものだけでなく、存在するかもしれないものによっても心を動かされる。
見えない存在への期待は、好奇心を生み、想像力を広げ、日常の風景に新たな意味を与える。
それは子供たちの冒険心だけでなく、大人にとっても世界をより豊かに感じるための重要な要素である。
本研究では、まず河童と天狗を事例として取り上げ、それらの存在が日本人の想像力や文化、人々の体験価値にどのような影響を与えてきたのかを探究していく。
最終的には、河童や天狗そのものを研究するのではなく、「見えない存在への期待」が人々の喜びや楽しみ、発見や冒険心をどのように生み出しているのかを明らかにすることを目的とする。
