本ORDの目的は、OM-LS-001という一個体が2026年時点でどのような物理状態にあり、どのような状態で調査されたかを、将来再確認できるObject-Centered Physical Baselineとして記録することにあります。

本記録では、保存個体そのものを直接観察・測定することによって得られた情報を中心に、全体形状、主要寸法、成形合板の構造、開口部、刻印、表面状態、亀裂、積層状態、重量および関連する写真証拠を統合しています。

これにより、将来において同一個体の物理状態を再確認し、経年変化や保存状態を比較するための基準点を残します。

公開範囲

本Final Public Editionでは、公開研究およびアーカイブ上の参照に適すると判断した主要な物理観察、測定値、分類情報および写真証拠を公開します。

本ORDの中心は、あくまで保存されている実物個体そのものです。

測定に使用した器具、一時的な測定配置、内部作業資料、予備的な検討資料その他の研究補助資料については、公開されるPhysical Baselineを理解するために必要なものを除き、資料本体の構成要素として扱いません。

また、異なる時期に実施された測定については、必要に応じてそれぞれ独立した測定記録として保持し、人為的に一つの値へ統合しません。

これにより、各測定時の条件と記録を保持するとともに、将来の研究において測定差、測定条件および実物の物理的変化の可能性を検証できる構造としています。

OM ORD Standard Methodとの関係

OM-LS-001は、OM ORD Standard Method Version 1.0を確立するためのPilot Objectではありません。

OM ORDの完全な方法論および標準化を構築するPilot Objectは、22degrees Origin Museumが保存するZenith Plastics製Salmon Pink Fiberglass Arm Shell Chairです。

したがって、本Leg Splint ORDは、将来のすべてのOM収蔵対象に適用する完全なORD方法論を確立することを目的とするものではありません。

OM-ORD-LS-001は、この歴史的に重要なOrigin Objectについて必要かつ適切な一次研究データを記録する、Object-Centered Physical Baselineとして位置づけられます。

この区分により、OMでは各保存対象の研究上の重要性と必要性に応じた記録を行いながら、完全な方法論の標準化については、指定されたPilot Objectを通じて別途確立していきます。

掲載画像は台帳のレイアウトに合わせた閲覧用複製であり、元の写真ファイルそのものには変更を加えていません。

記録上の注記

撮影当日はカラーチェッカーまたはグレーカードが用意されていなかったため、色基準写真は撮影されていません。

また、受領したアクセスコピーからはEXIF情報を確認できませんでした。ただし、この記載は、元の撮影ファイルにEXIF情報が存在しないことを意味するものではありません。

研究・保存上の位置づけ

本台帳は、資料の保存管理、比較研究、状態確認および学術的引用を支援するための一次的な視覚記録です。

22degrees Origin Museum (OM) has published the official photographic documentation for the Eames Leg Splint, preserved under Collection Object ID OM-LS-001.

This documentation systematically registers the photographic records created to preserve a verifiable visual account of the object’s form, construction, dimensions, laminated structure, markings, evidence of use, and present condition.

Contents of the Documentation

The 47-page document contains 122 primary photographs (P001–P122) and two derivative reference images (D001–D002).

The images reproduced in this document are layout-sized access derivatives. The original photographic source files have not been altered.

Documentation Notes

A ColorChecker or gray card was not available during the photographic session. Consequently, no color-reference photograph was recorded on that date.

No visible EXIF metadata could be confirmed in the access copies received for preparation of this documentation. This statement does not establish that EXIF metadata is absent from the original photographic files.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OFFICIAL PRESERVATION REGISTER

The Acquisition Decision Record and the Official Preservation Register serve different but complementary functions.

The Acquisition Decision Record documents why the object was acquired and preserved.

The Official Preservation Register documents what the object is, its physical characteristics, measurements, markings, condition, photographic records, preservation environment, handling, treatment, and continuing updates.

Together, these two documents form the permanent scholarly record for OM-LS-001.

PUBLIC EDITION POLICY

This Official Public Edition was derived from the OM-ADR-LS-001 Official Final Master Edition Version 2.0, issued on 2026.08.12.

The acquisition price has been excluded from the public edition. The research process, comparative assessment, evidentiary classifications, acquisition rationale, uncertainties, preservation philosophy, and scholarly conclusions have otherwise been maintained.

The complete internal master edition remains preserved as the authoritative archival record.

SCHOLARLY POSITION

OM-LS-001 is preserved as the first Origin Object of 22degrees Origin Museum.

Background

The acquisition of this object was not intended simply to expand a furniture collection.

Beginning in the early 2000s, the curator developed a long-term interest in the furniture and design philosophy of Charles and Ray Eames.

Between 2025 and 2026, research increasingly focused on the earliest Zenith Plastics fiberglass arm shell chairs and the technological origins of Eames design.

During this research, it became evident that preserving only the finished furniture would leave the historical narrative incomplete.

To accurately explain where Eames design originated, it became necessary to preserve the experimental objects that preceded the furniture itself.

The Eames Leg Splint therefore became recognized as an indispensable origin object within the museum’s preservation program.

Accordingly, this acquisition represents the beginning of preserving the historical process of Eames design rather than simply preserving vintage furniture.

Provenance

Prior owner testimony indicates that:

The object was acquired more than ten years before resale.
Three examples were originally purchased when a Japanese mid-century furniture dealer closed its warehouse.
The original overseas source is unknown.
The object was believed to have been imported as unused old stock.
Original shipping materials were discarded because of deterioration.
After acquisition, the object remained stored indoors.
It was never displayed.
No repair has been performed.
No adhesive repairs exist.
No structural modifications have been identified.
The object has remained in stable indoor storage.

These statements constitute an important part of the provenance currently associated with this object and are permanently preserved as documentary evidence.

取得の背景

本資料の取得は、単なるヴィンテージ家具の収集を目的としたものではない。

2000年代初頭より、Charles & Ray Eames が設計した家具とそのデザイン思想に関心を持ち、2025年から2026年にかけては、1950年代初頭の Zenith Plastics 製アームシェルチェアを中心とした研究を継続してきた。

その研究を進める中で、完成した家具のみを保存するだけでは、Eamesデザインの成立過程を十分に伝えることはできないという認識に至った。

Eamesデザインがどこから始まり、どのような技術的発展を経てアームシェルチェアへ到達したのかを説明するためには、その前段階となる起源資料の保存が不可欠である。

その結果、本資料である Leg Splint を、OM (22degrees Origin Museum) における最初の起源資料として取得することを決定した。

本取得は、ヴィンテージ家具の保存ではなく、Eamesデザイン史そのものを保存する活動の出発点である。

来歴（Provenance）

出品者から確認できた事項は次のとおりである。

・約10年以上前に取得した個体である。

・ミッドセンチュリー家具店の閉店時、倉庫在庫から3点取得したうちの1点である。

・それ以前の所有履歴は不明である。

・海外から輸入された未使用デッドストックであった可能性が高い。

・当時の輸送梱包材は劣化が著しく廃棄された。

・取得後は室内保管のみで展示歴はない。

・補修歴は確認されていない。

Abstract

This essay examines the significance of the Eames Leg Splint from the perspective of Human-People Experience Research and the curatorial philosophy of the OM (22degrees Origin Museum).

The Eames Leg Splint is commonly understood as a wartime medical device developed during the Second World War. Within the OM (22degrees Origin Museum), however, it is interpreted more broadly as a foundational artifact representing the origins of Eames design and an early stage in the history of human-centered experience design.

This essay also explains why the museum places particular importance on early Zenith Plastics fiberglass Arm Shell Chairs, especially Salmon Pink examples, and why the Leg Splint serves as the essential point of entry for understanding their historical and conceptual significance.

Preserving Origins

身体、素材、形態の関係を探究した実験は、住宅、学校、オフィス、施設、公共空間へ広く導入される社会的な物体へと発展した。

なぜZenith Plasticsなのか

現在、多くのEamesチェアが現存しており、後年の個体にも大きなデザイン的・歴史的価値がある。

その一方で、OM (22degrees Origin Museum)のキュレーションにおいては、初期Zenith Plastics製個体を特に重視する。

その理由は、それらがFiberglass Shell Chairの形成期を保存しているからである。

歴史的価値は、品質や希少性だけによって決まるものではない。

始まりにも価値がある。

初期Zenith製個体は、新しい素材、新しい製造方法、家具と工業生産の新しい関係が、世界へ登場した瞬間を記録している。

それらは、後年の生産が標準化される以前の、試行と形成の痕跡を保持している。

そのため、Eamesデザインをオリジンから解釈するうえで、不可欠な資料である。

なぜSalmon Pinkなのか

Salmon Pinkの重要性は、希少性だけにあるのではない。

それは初期Fiberglass生産期を特徴づける色彩の一つであり、その時代の感覚的な特質を保存している。

人は、物体を形だけで体験するのではない。

色、質感、雰囲気、記憶、文化的連想、感情を通じても体験している。

Human-People Experience研究の観点から見れば、色彩は二次的な装飾ではない。

色彩もまた、その物体が生み出す体験の一部である。

したがってSalmon PinkのArm Shell Chairは、素材と製造の歴史だけでなく、特定の時代に存在した感覚的・情緒的体験の形式を保存する資料でもある。

なぜLeg Splintが入口でなければならないのか

Arm Shell Chairから始まる展示は、主として家具の展示として理解される可能性がある。

しかしLeg Splintから始まる展示は、歴史的な物語となる。

その物語は、負傷兵と、人間の身体を支えるという切迫した必要から始まる。

そこから、成形合板、人体、曲面、圧力、生産に関する研究へと進む。

さらにLCW、DCW、DCMを経て、Fiberglass Shell Chairへと発展する。

したがってLeg Splintは、多数の資料の中の一つではない。

それは、物語全体への入口である。

Eamesの家具が、単なる様式として突然生まれたのではなく、研究、必要性、実験、人間観察、技術的課題の解決を通じて形成されたことを説明するための出発点である。

OM (22degrees Origin Museum)構想

OM (22degrees Origin Museum)は、単なる家具の博物館として構想されているのではない。

それは、起源、思想、過程、実験、人間中心のデザイン開発を保存する博物館として構想されている。

保存する対象は、何が生産されたかだけではない。

なぜそれが生まれたのか、どのような課題に向き合っていたのか、どのような発見がなされ、その発見からどのような人間体験が生み出されたのかを保存する。

この構造において、Eames Leg Splintは第一章に位置付けられる。

初期Zenith Plastics製Arm Shell Chair、特にSalmon Pinkの個体は、素材研究、身体支持、工業生産、色彩、社会的普及という複数の思想が、日常生活へ到達した重要な後続章を構成する。

結論

Eames Leg Splintは、単なる医療器具として理解されるべきものではない。

OM (22degrees Origin Museum)において、それはEames思想史の基礎を示す資料として解釈される。

Leg Splintは、素材と形態を通じた人体研究を示している。

LCWは、その研究を日常の快適性へ応用した成果を示している。

Arm Shell Chairは、人間中心のデザインを、多くの人々が利用できる社会的な体験へ拡張したことを示している。
