Chapter 3
Discovery of Experiential Value
What Emerged from the Study of Human Living
Chapter 1 explored the foundations of human formation through nature, music, and cultural experiences.
Chapter 2 examined the study of time and space through decades of residential development.
This chapter focuses on the emergence of the concept of experiential value and how it became a central theme within 22degrees Universe.
Throughout years of residential development, an important question continued to appear:
How should the value of a living environment be understood?
A larger residence does not automatically create greater satisfaction.
Expensive equipment does not necessarily create a richer life.
Even within the same building, different people experience different levels of attachment, comfort, and fulfillment.
These observations suggested that the value of a living environment cannot be explained solely through physical conditions.
Similar patterns appeared in music and nature.
People listening to the same music often experience different emotions.
People viewing the same landscape often remember different aspects of it.
People witnessing the same sunset often assign different meanings to the experience.
At first glance, these differences may appear to be simple individual preferences.
However, long-term observation suggested that these differences may be one of the most important characteristics of human beings.
Human living is shaped by more than architecture and technology.
Light, sound, temperature, materials, nature, and human relationships all influence daily experience.
At the same time, every individual brings different memories, experiences, values, and sensitivities into the same environment.
As a result, identical conditions do not produce identical experiences.
Diversity of experience appears to be a natural outcome of human existence.
This realization provided a common perspective through which residential development, music, and nature could be understood.
Although these fields seem different, they all influence human experience.
Residential environments provide the setting for experience.
Music influences experience.
Nature influences experience.
Light, materials, and atmosphere influence experience.
These are not isolated subjects.
They are interconnected elements that contribute to experiential value.
Through this perspective, the focus gradually shifted from studying time and space themselves to studying the experiences that emerge within them.
Within this research, the term “Experiential Value” refers to the meaning, quality, and significance that people derive from their lived experiences.
Experiential value is not limited to emotion.
Nor is it limited to temporary satisfaction.
It includes the process through which human beings encounter a moment, interpret it, assign meaning to it, and carry it forward as memory.
This concept later developed into research themes such as Human-People Experience, Human Difference, and the design of experiences across different times of day.
The next major turning point emerged through an encounter with generative AI and music creation.

体験価値という発見
人間の暮らしの研究から見えてきたもの
第1章では、自然、音楽、文化経験によって形成された感受性について整理した。
第2章では、住宅開発を通じた時間と空間の研究について整理した。
本章では、それらの経験から生まれた「体験価値」という考え方についてまとめる。
住宅開発の現場では、住まいの価値とは何かという問いに長年向き合うことになった。
広い住まいが必ずしも高い満足につながるわけではない。
高価な設備が必ずしも豊かな暮らしを生み出すわけでもない。
同じ建物に住んでいても、人によって満足度や愛着は異なる。
同じことは音楽や自然にも見られる。
同じ音楽を聴いても感じ方は異なる。
同じ景色を見ても記憶に残る内容は異なる。
同じ夕暮れを見ても受け取る意味は異なる。
こうした観察を続ける中で、人間を理解するためには体験そのものを研究する必要があるという認識が生まれた。
人間の暮らしは建築や設備だけで構成されているわけではない。
光、音、温度、素材、自然、人との関係など、多くの要素によって形づくられている。
さらに、それらを受け取る人間側にも、それぞれ異なる記憶、経験、価値観、感受性が存在する。
その結果、同じ環境から生まれる体験は一つではない。
住宅、音楽、自然という異なる分野を見ているようでいて、その中心には常に人間の体験が存在していた。
住宅は体験の舞台となる。
音楽は体験に影響を与える。
自然は体験を豊かにする。
光や素材も体験の質を変化させる。
こうして研究の対象は、時間や空間そのものから、その中で生まれる体験へと広がっていった。
22degrees Universeでは、この体験の質や意味を「体験価値」と呼んでいる。
体験価値とは、人間がある時間や空間を経験し、その中で意味を見出し、記憶として蓄積していく過程全体を含む概念である。
この考え方は後に Human-People Experience、Human Difference、時間帯ごとの体験設計へと発展していくことになる。
そして次の章では、音楽生成AIとの出会いがどのように22degrees Universeの誕生につながったのかを整理する。
