本作品「努力（Effort）」は、1970年代後半から1980年代前半頃、作者が青年期に鉄板を切り出して制作した文字作品である。
その後、本作品は作者から譲り受けられ、所有者が10代の頃から現在に至るまで長期間にわたり保存されてきた。特に20代前半以降は、住宅づくりの仕事、学び、資格取得、人生における困難や転機など、さまざまな時間を通して、常に日常生活の中で目にすることのできる場所に置かれてきた。
その期間は、およそ37年に及ぶ。
この長期的な関係において、本作品は単に所有・保管されてきた物品ではなく、「努力」という言葉を媒介として、作者から受け継いだ価値観と、所有者自身の経験や記憶が継続的に重なってきた存在である。
2026年9月3日、本作品を今後さらに長期的に保存していくため、新たな額装を行った。
今回の額装は既製の展示状態をそのまま採用したものではなく、長年この作品とともに生活してきた所有者自身が、作品に対する記憶と個人的な思いを踏まえながら、その保存と提示の方法を自ら構成したものである。
黒色のフレームと余白を持たせた内部構成によって、鉄製の「努力」そのものを視覚的な中心として独立させ、作品の物質性、輪郭、重量感、そして文字としての存在を明確に認識できる状態とした。
重要なのは、この額装そのものが1970年代後半から1980年代前半頃に制作された原作品の一部ではないという点である。
原作品は、あくまで鉄から制作された「努力」の文字オブジェであり、2026年9月3日に行われた額装は、その原作品を保護し、現在および将来にわたって保存・提示するために加えられた現代的な保存・展示構成である。
したがって22degrees Preservation Assets Collectionでは、原作品と現代の額装を資料上明確に区別しながら、その両者が2026年9月3日時点で形成した保存状態についても記録する。
この保存行為には、物理的な対象を保護することだけではなく、本作品が一人の人間の人生の中でどのように存在し続けてきたのかを記録するという目的がある。
作者が青年期に制作した「努力」が、その後別の人間へ受け継がれ、約37年間にわたって日常の中に置かれ続け、その言葉が仕事、学び、困難、挑戦、そして生活のさまざまな局面と結びつきながら意味を蓄積してきた。
その時間的な連続性そのものが、本作品を理解するための重要な資料的要素である。
2026年9月3日に行われた額装と保存は、この長期間にわたる関係を一つの区切りとして記録し、本作品を将来へ継承するための新たな保存段階へ移行させる行為として位置づけられる。
22degrees Preservation Assets Collectionでは、本作品について、素材、寸法、重量、形状、制作年代、来歴といった物理的・歴史的情報だけでなく、作者と所有者との関係、作品が置かれてきた時間、その言葉から受け取られてきた価値観、そして長期間にわたる人と物との相互関係についても保存対象として扱う。
それは、一つの物が人の人生の中に存在し続けることで形成される Human People Experience の記録でもある。
「努力（Effort）」は、2026年9月3日、22-PA-001 / A Life Companion Preservation Assetとして、新たな額装状態のもとで正式に保存された。

保存と現代的額装
“Effort” is a text-based object created from a cut iron plate, believed to have been produced between the late 1970s and early 1980s, when its creator was still a young man.
The work was later passed on to its present owner and has been preserved from the owner’s teenage years to the present day. In particular, from the owner’s early twenties onward, it remained continuously visible within everyday life through periods of work in residential design and construction, study, professional qualification, personal difficulty, and major life transitions.
This relationship has continued for approximately 37 years.
Throughout that period, the work was not merely an object that was owned or stored. Through the word “Effort,” it became a continuing point of connection between the values inherited from its creator and the experiences and memories accumulated by its owner over time.
On September 3, 2026, the work was newly framed in order to support its long-term preservation.
The present framing was not adopted as a pre-existing display condition. It was conceived and assembled by the owner, who had lived with the work for many years, as a contemporary preservation and presentation structure informed by personal memory and the significance the object had acquired over time.
The black frame and surrounding spatial margin were arranged so that the iron word itself remains the visual center of the composition. This presentation emphasizes the materiality, silhouette, physical weight, and presence of the object as both language and form.
It is important to distinguish this contemporary framing from the original work.
The original object consists of the iron characters forming the word “努力” (“Effort”). The framing completed on September 3, 2026 is not part of the object as originally produced in the late 1970s or early 1980s. It is a later preservation and display structure created to protect, present, and transmit the work into the future.
Accordingly, the 22degrees Preservation Assets Collection records the original object and the contemporary framing as separate documentary elements, while also preserving the specific condition in which they were brought together on September 3, 2026.
The purpose of this preservation process extends beyond the physical protection of the object.
It also seeks to document how this work has continued to exist within the life of one person over an extended period of time.
A word formed in iron by a young man was later passed to another person, remained present in daily life for approximately 37 years, and gradually accumulated meaning through work, study, difficulty, challenge, and ordinary experience.
This continuity of time forms an important part of the documentary significance of the object.
The framing and preservation completed on September 3, 2026 therefore mark a new stage in the life of the work: a point at which a long-standing personal relationship with the object was formally documented and transferred into a structured process of long-term preservation.
Within the 22degrees Preservation Assets Collection, the preservation of this work includes not only its material, dimensions, weight, form, estimated period of production, and provenance, but also the relationship between its creator and its owner, the time through which it has been continuously present, the values transmitted through it, and the long-term interaction between a person and an object.
These elements are preserved as part of its Human People Experience.
On September 3, 2026, “Effort” was formally preserved as 22-PA-001 / A Life Companion Preservation Asset within its newly created framing and preservation condition.

- The Object
“Effort” is a text-based artwork created by cutting and shaping a piece of iron plate.
It is believed to have been produced sometime between the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Although composed of a single character, the work possesses a strong presence and evokes ideas of determination, discipline, and perseverance.
The use of iron contributes a sense of weight, durability, and permanence that resonates with the meaning of the word itself. In this sense, the material and the message become inseparable.
Rather than functioning merely as a means of communication, the word is transformed into a physical object that embodies a philosophy and a way of life.
The creator was born in Saga Prefecture, Japan, and pursued a distinguished career in judo based in Aichi Prefecture. He later became a champion of the All Japan Corporate Judo Individual Championships and contributed to the leadership and administration of the Japan Masters Judo community. He has also been a mentor throughout life.
This object was received during my teenage years.
From my early twenties, when I began working in residential housing and homebuilding, to the present day, this object has remained in a visible place for approximately thirty-seven years.
It has accompanied periods of professional challenge.
Moments of personal hardship.
The pursuit of learning and professional qualifications.
The discipline of everyday living.
And a lifelong commitment to creating homes and environments for people.
Throughout these experiences, the word “Effort” has remained close at hand.
When viewed in the context of the creator’s life as a judoka, the work may be understood not as a representation of victory or achievement, but as a symbol of the long and continuous process of self-cultivation.
This object is neither a decorative item nor merely a keepsake.
It represents the values cherished by a dedicated judoka and has also become a symbolic presence that has supported a life over many decades.
Today, this work is preserved as part of the 22degrees Preservation Assets Collection.
The collection preserves not only the object itself, but also documents how a single word can continue to influence a person’s life over time as a record of Human-People Experience.

作品概要
「努力」は、鉄板を切り出して制作された文字作品である。

一文字のみで構成された極めて簡潔な造形でありながら、その存在感は強く、鑑賞者に精神性や意志を想起させる特徴を持つ。

作者は、佐賀県出身で愛知県を拠点に柔道競技を続け、後に全日本実業柔道個人選手権優勝を果たし、日本マスターズ柔道界の指導・運営にも携わった人生の師である。
10代の頃にこの作品を譲り受けた。
その後、住宅づくりの仕事に携わるようになった20代前半から現在に至るまで、およそ37年間、この作品を常に目に見える場所に置きながら生活を続けてきた。
仕事における困難な局面。

学びや資格取得への挑戦。
日々の暮らしを整え続けること。
そして住宅づくりを通じて人々の暮らしと向き合うこと。
そのような様々な場面において、「努力」という言葉は常に身近に存在し続けた。
また、作者が柔道家として歩んだ人生と重ね合わせて鑑賞した場合、本作品は競技成績や勝敗を表現するものではなく、人が長い年月をかけて自己を鍛え続ける過程そのものを象徴する作品として解釈することができる。
本作品は単なる装飾品でも、単なる記念品でもない。
それは一人の柔道家が大切にしていた価値観を象徴する作品であり、同時に人生を長期間にわたり支え続けた象徴的存在でもある。
現在、本作品は22degrees Preservation Assets Collectionの収蔵品として保存されている。
本コレクションでは、この作品そのものだけではなく、一つの言葉がどのように人の人生へ作用し続けるのかというHuman-People Experienceの記録としても保存を行っていく。
02. The Creator and Provenance
作者と来歴
The creator of this work is a judoka who devoted his life to the practice of judo and has been a lifelong mentor to me.
From an early age, he chose the path of judo out of consideration for his family and continued to build himself through quiet and persistent daily training.
During his youth, while working for a steel manufacturing company, he created this work, Effort.
This piece was not produced after achieving national recognition or major competitive success. Rather, it was created at the beginning of his adult life, when he was still walking toward an unknown future with determination and hope.
In the years that followed, he continued his lifelong dedication to judo, eventually becoming one of Japan’s distinguished competitors while also contributing to the education and development of future generations.
Approximately fifty years after the work was created, the creator learned that it had been carefully preserved for decades.
Upon hearing this, he humbly remarked:
“I never imagined something like this would be treasured so carefully. I am truly grateful.”
This response reflects the character of the creator himself.
The significance of this work lies not only in the object, but also in the humility, sincerity, and enduring spirit of effort embodied by its creator.
These words are preserved together with the work itself as an important part of its provenance and historical record.
02. The Creator and Provenance
作者と来歴
本作品の作者は、長年にわたり柔道の道を歩み続けた柔道家であり、私にとって人生の師でもある。
少年時代、家族への思いから自ら柔道の道を選び、日々の地道な鍛錬を積み重ねながら、人としての生き方を築いていった。
青年期、鉄を扱う企業に勤めていた頃に、本作品「努力」を制作した。
この作品は、大きな実績や名声を得た後に制作されたものではない。
まだ未来へ向かって歩み始めた青年が、自らの人生に向けた静かな決意を、一文字の「努力」に託して生み出した作品である。
その後も長年にわたり柔道を続け、日本を代表する競技者の一人として歩むとともに、後進の育成や柔道界の発展にも貢献し続けた。
本作品の制作から約50年後、この作品が長年にわたり大切に保存され続けていたことを知った作者は、
「そんな大したものではないのに、大切にしてくれて本当にありがたい。」
と語り、そのことを心から喜んだという。
この言葉は、作者自身の人柄を表すとともに、本作品が歩んできた歴史の一部でもある。
本作品の価値は、鉄という素材や文字の造形だけにあるのではない。
作者が生涯を通して示し続けた謙虚さ、誠実さ、そして努力を積み重ねる精神が、この作品そのものに静かに宿っている。
その思いとともに、本作品は作者の来歴を伝える貴重な記録として、22degrees Preservation Assets Collectionに保存される。
