この作品は、古民家の南側斜面に広がるみかん山から毎年いただくみかんの皮を、新たな命ある素材として残したいという思いから生まれた。
果実としての役目を終えたみかんの皮を細かく砕き、植物繊維とともに何度も試作を重ね、一枚の紙として再生している。紙の厚みや繊維の配合、乾燥の速度など、わずかな条件の違いによって表情は大きく変化し、完成までには数え切れない試行錯誤が積み重ねられた。
紙の中には、作者が長年大切に育ててきた沖縄のブーゲンビリアの花弁が静かに漉き込まれている。そのブーゲンビリアは冬を越えることができず、今はもうこの世界には存在しない。しかし、その花はこの一枚の中で、時間を超えて咲き続けている。
自然は季節とともに姿を変え、やがて失われていく。それでも、人の記憶や土地とのつながりは、別のかたちで未来へ受け継ぐことができる。
この作品は、素材をつくることを目的としたものではない。
土地の恵み、失われた命、そして作者自身の時間を、一枚の紙に静かに封じ込めた記憶のアーカイブである。

Memories — Citrus Hill & Bougainvillea
Museum Description
This artwork was born from a desire to preserve the peels of citrus fruits generously received each year from the citrus grove on the southern hillside facing the artist’s traditional Japanese house, transforming them into a new living material.
After the fruit had fulfilled its purpose, the peels were finely processed and combined with natural plant fibers to create a handmade paper through repeated experimentation. The thickness of the paper, the balance of the fibers, and the drying process all influenced the final result. Countless trials were required before this single sheet could be completed.
Embedded within the paper are delicate petals from a Bougainvillea that the artist had carefully nurtured for many years. The plant could not survive the winter and no longer exists. Yet within this work, its blossoms continue to exist, quietly transcending time.
Nature changes with the seasons, and eventually disappears. Even so, memories and our connection to a place can continue to exist in another form.
This artwork was not created simply to produce a new material.
It is an archive of memory—quietly preserving the gifts of the land, a life that has passed, and a fragment of the artist’s own time within a single sheet of paper.
