Overview
The Eames Leg Splint is registered as the first origin object preserved by the Eames Origin Museum.
Originally developed during the Second World War as a medical support device for injured soldiers, the Leg Splint represents far more than its military function. It embodies the earliest practical application of Charles and Ray Eames’ molded plywood research and marks the beginning of a design philosophy that would later evolve into the LCW, DCW, DCM, and Fiberglass Shell Chairs.
Within the Eames Origin Museum, this object is preserved not as a medical artifact, but as a primary historical document representing the origin of Eames design. Its significance lies in preserving the technological experimentation, human-centered thinking, and creative process that established one of the most influential design movements of the twentieth century.

Method of Acquisition
Purchased through a major Japanese secondhand marketplace.
Original Listing ID

Background
The acquisition of this object was not intended simply to expand a furniture collection.
Beginning in the early 2000s, the curator developed a long-term interest in the furniture and design philosophy of Charles and Ray Eames.
Between 2025 and 2026, research increasingly focused on the earliest Zenith Plastics fiberglass arm shell chairs and the technological origins of Eames design.
During this research, it became evident that preserving only the finished furniture would leave the historical narrative incomplete.
To accurately explain where Eames design originated, it became necessary to preserve the experimental objects that preceded the furniture itself.
The Eames Leg Splint therefore became recognized as an indispensable origin object within the museum’s preservation program.
Accordingly, this acquisition represents the beginning of preserving the historical process of Eames design rather than simply preserving vintage furniture.
Provenance
Prior owner testimony indicates that:
- The object was acquired more than ten years before resale.
- Three examples were originally purchased when a Japanese mid-century furniture dealer closed its warehouse.
- The original overseas source is unknown.
- The object was believed to have been imported as unused old stock.
- Original shipping materials were discarded because of deterioration.
- After acquisition, the object remained stored indoors.
- It was never displayed.
- No repair has been performed.
- No adhesive repairs exist.
- No structural modifications have been identified.
- The object has remained in stable indoor storage.
These statements constitute an important part of the provenance currently associated with this object and are permanently preserved as documentary evidence.

Overall preservation condition was good.
However, the EVANS inspection stamp had become relatively indistinct, reducing its documentary value.
Example B
Confirmed original serial markings.
EVANS inspection stamp clearly preserved.
“MOLDED PLYWOOD DIVISION” marking confirmed.
“LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA” marking confirmed.
Additional documentation and testimony were obtained from the seller.
Overall preservation was considered excellent for museum documentation purposes.
Example C

Curator’s Commentary
The significance of this object is not determined by rarity alone.
Its true value lies in its ability to explain where Eames design began.
The Eames Leg Splint represents the moment when research into human anatomy, molded plywood technology, and industrial production first converged into a tangible object.
Without understanding this object, the historical development leading to the LCW, DCW, DCM, and the Fiberglass Shell Chair cannot be fully understood.
For this reason, the Eames Origin Museum preserves this object not as a military medical device, but as the first chapter in the story of Eames design.
Its preservation ensures that future generations will understand not only what Charles and Ray Eames created, but also how their ideas first took physical form.

Chapter 15
Interpretive Essay
Human-People Experience Research and the Significance of the Eames Leg Splint
— Origin Preservation, Experience Design, and the Eames Origin Museum Concept —
June 20, 2026
Abstract
This essay examines the significance of the Eames Leg Splint from the perspective of Human-People Experience Research and the curatorial philosophy of the Eames Origin Museum.
The Eames Leg Splint is commonly understood as a wartime medical device developed during the Second World War. Within the Eames Origin Museum, however, it is interpreted more broadly as a foundational artifact representing the origins of Eames design and an early stage in the history of human-centered experience design.
This essay also explains why the museum places particular importance on early Zenith Plastics fiberglass Arm Shell Chairs, especially Salmon Pink examples, and why the Leg Splint serves as the essential point of entry for understanding their historical and conceptual significance.
- Preserving Origins
Many collections concentrate on completed works.
Historical understanding, however, requires the preservation of origins as well as outcomes.
To understand architecture, it is necessary to preserve sketches, plans, models, and design processes in addition to completed buildings.
To understand music, it is necessary to preserve the creative process as well as the finished composition.
Likewise, understanding Charles and Ray Eames requires more than preserving their most widely recognized chairs. It requires examining where their ideas began, what problems they sought to solve, and how their methods developed over time.
The Leg Splint represents one of the clearest physical points of origin in that history.
- What the Leg Splint Represents
The Eames Leg Splint was developed during the Second World War as a molded plywood support device for the lower limbs of wounded soldiers.
It is therefore commonly classified as a military medical object.
Its deeper significance, however, lies in the investigation embodied within it: how could an industrially manufactured object be shaped to correspond with the human body?
The Leg Splint was not only an exercise in production technology. It was also an investigation into anatomy, pressure, support, comfort, form, and the relationship between the human body and a manufactured object.
Before Charles and Ray Eames created many of their best-known furniture designs, they studied how material and form could respond to people.
This sequence is essential to understanding the later development of their work.
- From the Study of the Human Body to the Study of Human Experience
Human-People Experience Research examines how people experience comfort, discovery, joy, meaning, memory, enrichment, and engagement.
The Eames molded plywood experiments began with an effort to understand and support the human body.
Human-People Experience Research begins with an effort to understand and support human experience.
The subjects are not identical, but the underlying direction is closely related.
Both begin with the human being.
Both seek to understand how design can respond to human needs.
Both regard an object not merely as a physical form, but as something that affects the way people live, feel, move, remember, and experience the world.
- From the Leg Splint to the LCW
The molded plywood research represented by the Leg Splint later developed into furniture such as the LCW.
The LCW should not be understood merely as a formal or technical achievement.
It represents the continuation of research into the relationship between the body and the object.
The concerns visible in the Leg Splint—support, pressure distribution, curvature, material behavior, and bodily adaptation—were translated from a wartime medical context into the conditions of everyday life.
The LCW therefore represents an important transition.
It marks the movement from medical necessity toward comfort, domestic use, and the design of daily human experience.
- From the LCW to the Arm Shell Chair
The Arm Shell Chair extended this development further.
The challenge was no longer limited to producing an object responsive to an individual body. It became a broader social question: how could good design, comfort, efficient production, and visual quality be made accessible to many people?
The molded shell allowed a single continuous form to support the body while also being suitable for industrial production.
In this sense, the Arm Shell Chair represents more than a new chair type.
It represents the expansion and democratization of designed experience.
An experimental investigation into the relationship between body, material, and form became an object capable of entering homes, schools, offices, institutions, and public environments.
- Why Zenith Plastics Matters
Many Eames chairs survive today, and many later examples possess substantial design and historical value.
Within the curatorial framework of the Eames Origin Museum, particular importance is placed on early Zenith Plastics examples because they preserve the formative stage of fiberglass shell production.
Historical significance is not determined by quality or rarity alone.
Beginnings also matter.
Early Zenith examples document the moment when a new material, a new manufacturing process, and a new relationship between furniture and industrial production entered the world.
They preserve evidence of experimentation before later production became standardized.
For this reason, they are essential to an origin-centered interpretation of Eames design.
- Why Salmon Pink Matters
The significance of Salmon Pink extends beyond rarity.
It represents one of the distinctive colors associated with the early fiberglass production period and preserves an important aspect of the sensory character of that era.
People do not experience an object through form alone.
They also experience color, texture, atmosphere, memory, cultural association, and emotion.
From the perspective of Human-People Experience Research, color is not a secondary decoration. It is part of the experience created by the object.
A Salmon Pink Arm Shell Chair therefore preserves not only material and manufacturing history, but also a particular historical form of sensory and emotional experience.
- Why the Leg Splint Must Come First
An exhibition beginning with Arm Shell Chairs may be understood primarily as a furniture display.
An exhibition beginning with the Leg Splint becomes a historical narrative.
It begins with wounded soldiers and the urgent need to support the human body.
It continues through research into molded plywood, anatomy, curvature, pressure, and production.
It then develops through the LCW, DCW, DCM, and ultimately the fiberglass shell chairs.
The Leg Splint is therefore not simply one object among many.
It is the entrance to the entire narrative.
It enables the museum to explain that Eames furniture did not emerge fully formed as a matter of style. It developed through research, necessity, experimentation, human observation, and technological problem-solving.
- The Eames Origin Museum Concept
The Eames Origin Museum is not intended to function merely as a museum of furniture.
It is conceived as a museum of origins, ideas, processes, experiments, and human-centered design development.
Its purpose is to preserve not only what was produced, but also why it was produced, what questions were being addressed, what discoveries were made, and what forms of human experience emerged from those discoveries.
Within this structure, the Eames Leg Splint occupies the first chapter.
Early Zenith Plastics Arm Shell Chairs, particularly Salmon Pink examples, represent a later and highly significant chapter in which the accumulated ideas of material research, bodily support, industrial production, color, and social accessibility entered everyday life.
Conclusion
The Eames Leg Splint should not be understood only as a medical device.
Within the Eames Origin Museum, it is interpreted as a foundational object in the history of Eames thinking.
The Leg Splint represents the study of the human body through material and form.
The LCW represents the application of that research to everyday comfort.
The Arm Shell Chair represents the expansion of human-centered design into a widely accessible social experience.
Early Zenith Plastics examples preserve the formative moment when these ideas entered fiberglass production.
Salmon Pink examples preserve an additional dimension: the sensory, atmospheric, and emotional character of early Eames design.
Together, these objects do not form separate categories of collecting.
They form one continuous historical narrative.
From the perspective of Human-People Experience Research, this narrative is not merely the history of furniture. It is a history of understanding human beings, translating that understanding into design, and creating meaningful experiences through material, form, technology, and color.
Accordingly, the Eames Origin Museum preserves the Eames Leg Splint not merely as a surviving wartime medical device, but as the first preserved object in a continuous narrative documenting the origins, development, and enduring legacy of Eames design.

Leg Splint
- Leg Splint
Eames Leg Splint
Leg Splint
Human-People Experience
Human-People Experience
Leg Splint
Arm Shell Chair
Salmon Pink
Human-People Experience
Arm Shell Chair
- Eames Origin Museum構想
Eames Origin Museum
Eames Leg Splint
Leg Splint
Arm Shell Chair
Human-People Experience
